What Brand Are You??

Teenagers are a complicated group of people. They tend to find ways around everything and if they don't get their way watch out for those rebels. A major thing that is common among teens are labels or group names. The typical names you can hear are jock, emo, nerd, bully, wannabes, and so on. Being a teen I witness everyday the labels that others place on people.

"He is such a nerd."
"That girl is a bitch, the way she thinks she is all cool in the American Eagle outfit."
"I hate those kids that wear all black, those emo freaks."

Teens are the group of humans that have a hard time finding their identity or individuality. Teenagers always look at others to see what they should do or think. They rarely take the time to think of things on their own. Following others seems to be the trend. It takes a couple of years before some figure out who they really are. In this process most decide to change up their identity a couple of times.

A breakdown of some of these common titles can be found in an article at http://teen-culture.suite101.com/article.cfm/teen_stereotypes.

Teen labeling has become a part in most teens' everyday lives. Labeling is something that can't be controlled anymore. You may see someone walking down the hall at school and just becomes that day specifically they are wearing all black you decide to categorize them as "emo" (emotional). In reality they are probably just another teen. One day wearing "jock" clothes and "emo" the next. Teens have come to far with labels. Below there are a few pictures of the most common titles people are given. These pictures are the stereotypes of the titles.

Identity is something that is affected by everyday life. People putting others into groups are the ones that get categorized as well. Teen labeling is a chain effects that stays in a circle and will never end. If you had to sit down and think about it, how many groups do you have in your school? What percentage is in each group? What group are you in and why?

All these questions variety depending on the person answering it. Labeling it like colors they are a little different shade to everyone.

  1. Amanda i think that everyone knows exactly what you're talking about! This blog is to the point and blunt. Throughout my 7 years at west de pere and even when i lived in oconto i witnessed all sorts of labels that people put on others. There many students out there that simply dread going to school because who they are has already been pre-determined by everyone else. It is extremely hard to find who you truly are in life, especially when everyone else assumes that they already know who you are. I feel like if everyone was more open to accepting people from different walks of life, high school would be more plesant for those who seem to have a hard time fitting in. Overall this blog just refreshed my memory as to how words have a huge impact on other people.Nice job Amanda!

  2. I agree with this post. Some teenagers will do anything to fir in even if they are lying to themselves. They'll call people names or dress certain ways to impress their friends. There is always a reason why people do the things they do. Dress to impress, something teens follow that right to the dot. We all should be who we are not who we want our friends to be and not who our parents want us to be. We should want to be an individual.

  4. I completely agree with this; I think that people are not being there true self because they just want to fit in with everyone else. I try to be myself as much as possible because I don’t want to be like everyone else. One quote that I follow is, “To resist the influence of others, knowledge of one's self is most important” and that was quoted is by Teal’c.
